What is EATS-OKINAWA?
In Okinawa, there is a beautiful word: nuchigusui, which literally means “medicine of life.” It combines nuchi (life) and gusui (medicine) and is used to describe food and drinks that are both delicious and nourishing, bringing healing and vitality to the mind and body. Beyond food, however, nuchigusui can also be used to refer to anything that soothes the heart and restores energy, from music and beautiful scenery to words and signs of affection.
Also, utuimuchi means hospitality in the Okinawan language. In the days of the Ryukyu Kingdom, whenever a new king was crowned, envoys from the Chinese emperor (known as “sappōshi”) were welcomed with lavish hospitality. The banquets, featuring court cuisine along with Ryukyuan dance and sanshin performances, expressed the spirit of utuimuchi valued by the people of the Ryukyu Kingdom. Today, the culture and spirit of nuchigusui and utuimuchi continue to be cherished in Okinawa. EATS OKINAWA introduces food experiences that will comfort and nourish the bodies and minds of all who visit Okinawa.
