When it comes to tea in Okinawa, sanpin tea, known for its jasmine aroma, is the most famous. A wide variety of other teas are also produced, however, including kumis kucing tea, guava tea, and gōyā tea. In recent years, production of black tea has also begun. Okinawa lies at a similar latitude to Assam and Darjeeling in India, regions famous for black tea, and is blessed with a climate and environment well suited to tea cultivation. This has given rise to branded teas such as Yanbaru black tea and Ryukyu black tea, grown in the mineral-rich red soil of Kunigami Village in northern Okinawa Main Island, as well as Kanigawa black tea, which won the grand prix in the “challenge division” of the Black Tea Grand Prix for three consecutive years. These teas are gaining popularity not only in restaurants but also as souvenirs.
