Passion fruit has a rich, sweet-tart flavor and aroma. Its Japanese name, kudamono-tokeisō (“fruit clock grass”), comes from its flowers, which resemble a clock face. The juice has a distinctive aroma and offers a perfect trio of tartness, sweetness, and aroma. Passion fruit grown in Okinawa is especially sweet and juicy. Cutting the fruit in half reveals that it is filled with juice and seeds, both surrounded by a jelly-like pulp. The pulp and seeds can be simply scooped out with a spoon and enjoyed for their smoothness going down and refreshing tartness. It is widely used to add a flavor accent to dressings, sauces, and other dishes. It also makes a great topping for ice cream or yogurt, and can be added to alcoholic drinks to enjoy its aroma. Passion fruit is highly nutritious, and particularly rich in carotene, which helps support overall health.
