In mainland Japan, watermelon is a summer fruit, but those grown on Ishigaki Island and in Nakijin village on Okinawa Main Island can also be enjoyed in winter. Known as Japan’s earliest-ripening watermelons, Nakijin watermelons are enjoyed even in the cold season and are prized for their high sugar content and crisp, refreshing texture. They are popular as gifts for Christmas and the year-end holidays. The red flesh is rich in the antioxidants lycopene and carotene, with beta-carotene levels comparable to those found in green and yellow vegetables. It is also rich in potassium and citrulline. The fruit’s natural fructose becomes sweeter when chilled, and in Okinawa it is a unique winter custom to enjoy chilled watermelon in the comfort of a warm room.
