Okinawa’s warm climate was long considered unsuitable for strawberry cultivation. Since 2018, however, when Ginoza Village declared itself the “Strawberry Village,” strawberry cultivation has expanded to places across Okinawa Main Island, including Yomitan Village and Nanjo City. An increasing number of municipalities and companies are focusing on developing branded Okinawan-grown strawberries, such as the “Berry Moon” brand strawberries, and their flavor now rival strawberries from other regions in Japan. Strawberries are rich in vitamin C, which supports collagen production and healthy skin. They also contain anthocyanins, the pigments that give them their striking red color, as well as pectin, a dietary fiber that is gentle on the body. The number of farms offering strawberry picking experiences has been growing, allowing visitors to taste and compare different varieties. They can also enjoy treats such as parfaits and smoothies made with fresh strawberries.
